Congress flays BJP over Modi toilet remark

New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS): The Congress Thursday accused the BJP of double standards after its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said toilets had to be a greater priority than temples in India.

Addressing college students Wednesday, the Gujarat chief minister rued that many Indians still do not have access to basic sanitation.

"My image is that of Hindutva but I'll tell you my real thinking. I have said in my state: pehle shauchalaya, phir devalaya (toilets first, temples later)," Modi said.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said this was another example of the Bharatiya Janata Party's double standards.

Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh drew flak from the BJP in April when he said that toilets are more important than temples.

"No matter how many temples we go to, we are not going to get salvation. We need to give priority to toilets and cleanliness," he had said.

The BJP's Rajiv Pratap Rudy had said then that such comments would "destroy the fine fabric of religion and faith".

Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists had even protested outside the minister's residence.

It's battle for supremacy between SANCTITY & SANITY...Now where are those VHP and BD guys who placed urine bottles outside Jairam's residence last October? Can Modi's statement reach Bal Thackrey in his grave since he had accused Ramesh for hurting the sentiments of the MAJORITY by not mentioning mosques and churches, and had tried appeasing the MINORITIES...why this constant double standard by BJP?...what is MAJORITY and MINORITY in India?...actually HAVE NOTS' are MAJORITY and 'HAVES'are MINORITY in my country.

A year ago, Union Minister Jairam said ""I think toilets are more important than temples. No matter how many temples we go to, we are not going to get salvation. We need to give priority to toilets and cleanliness." BJP then severely criticised Ramesh and demanded apology of the nation. Now 'Toilets before temples': Good for Narendra Modi, so why for Ramesh? What do Sangh Parivar and other fundamentalist forces say now?

But look at them now their own PM candidate is just repeating what Jairam said and now they sing along with the tune. Kachda people.

Devalaya Means - Prayer Center ( Prarthana Mandir), which means, Temple, Masid, Church etc....

What Jairam Said - shauchayal chahiye mandir nahin..

Here, Jairam Clearly says NO TEMPLES, He never Said NO CHURCH< NO MASID....
Where as Modi never said "NO" to temple church or masid.. He just said, "FIRST TOILET THEN PRAYER CENTER"
