Spanish fugitive terrorist held in Venezuela

Madrid, Sep 21 (IANS/EFE): A member of Spanish terrorist group ETA wanted by courts in Spain and France has been arrested in Venezuela, the Spanish interior ministry said.

Asier Guridi Zaloña, a fugitive since 2001, was apprehended thanks to cooperation among Venezuelan, Spanish and French authorities, the ministry said Friday.

Zaloña began his terror activities in 1987, taking part in attacks in the northern Spanish town of Oñate.

He was arrested in December 1992 and was behind bars until 1997.

In November 2009, the Paris Court of Appeals handed down a European arrest warrant for criminal association in the planning of a terrorist act.

ETA has killed more than 850 people since 1968 in its campaign for an independent state comprising parts of northern Spain and southern France.
