Choose between well-lit or dark city, says Dikshit

New Delhi, Sep 20 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Friday said it was up to the people to choose between a well-lit or a dark city as opposition can reduce electricity tariffs only by effecting power cuts for more than 10 hours.

The power tariff has become a major political issue with the polls to the Delhi assembly scheduled for November.

"They can bring down the tariff rates by only effecting longer power cuts of 10 hours or more duration. It is for the public to opt between a dark city and an illuminated city," Dikshit said in east Delhi's Kondli area, indirectly referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

While the BJP has pledged to bring down power tariff by 30 percent if voted to power, the AAP has been spearheading a focussed campaign against power rates in Delhi.

"Our government is sensitive to the needs of the poor and middle class families as it has given relief in power tariff to around 73 percent households of the city," Dikshit added.
