Mangalore, Feb 22: Those who have not visited Mangalore for long perhaps would not believe their eyes. The face of Mangalore has changed totally during the past two decades.

Gone are the old tile roofed houses and narrow lanes. There are many who think that, in the name of development, the city has lost its old charm and mystique.

A good number of people are alarmed at the haphazard growth of high-rise structures in the business areas. They opine that more attention should have been given to horizontal expansion of the city instead of concentration in limited areas. Focus should be on building satellite towns around, they say.

Such healthy development needs good planning, vision and political will.

Well, are we asking for too much?
