White House to celebrate Hispanic culture


Washington, Sep 13 (IANS/EFE): Gloria Estefan, Lila Downs, Ricky Martin and Alejandro Sanz are among the artistes invited to perform at a White House event next week as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, the White House said.

Musica Latina: In Performance at the White House would take place Sep 16, showcasing the influence and cultural contributions of Hispanic communities and their music, reported EFE quoting the White House statement.

The celebration of Latin music will be aired on PBS stations across the US Oct 8 and would be broadcaston Oct 13 by the American Forces Network to US military personnel and civilians at US Defence Department facilities around the world.

First lady Michelle Obama will host an educational workshop on the history of Latin music for students on the day of the event.

President Barack Obama will speak at the start of the event.
