Indian techie sentenced to nine months for sexual assault

Washington, Sep 12 (PTI): An Indian techie has been sentenced to nine months of imprisonment on charges of sexually assaulting an American woman during a flight, and faces deportation to India after serving his sentence.

Srinivasa S Erramilli, 46, a software consultant, has also been fined USD 5,000 and placed on court supervision for a year after he is released from custody by US District Judge Joan H Lefkow.

The judge set a hearing for next Wednesday on the government's request to revoke Erramilli's bond.

He is prohibited from airline travel while he is on supervised release and he is subject to deportation to India after being released from custody, the Department of Justice said.

In her order, judge Lefkow agreed with federal prosecutors that a custodial sentence was necessary to deter Erramilli and others from invading an individual’s bodily integrity and also to ensure that victims of abusive sexual contact will be heard and given protection.

In fact, he has two previous convictions for nearly identical crimes.

According to Department of Justice, evidence at the trial showed that Erramilli was the last passenger to board a Southwest Airlines flight to Chicago's Midway Airport on June 14, 2011, and was seated in the only open seat available between the victim, who had chosen a window seat to sleep during the flight, and her husband, who had chosen an aisle seat to enable easier access during the flight.

The couple had travelled to Las Vegas for their 34th wedding anniversary.

The victim, now 65, who was wearing shorts during the flight, testified that Erramilli groped her three times aboard the plane.

I am shocked at some of the comments. This man has done it before and earlier let off with a warning. If he is already a US citizen India can refuse him entry. There is no dearth of such people in India.

Had this happened in our Nation , the victims would be proved to be of questionable character for travelling in shorts and also questions would be asked if this would have occured at all had she been wearing a Burka...The Accused however, would get away with almost no punishment except for some media debate criticism and the get ready to attack his next victim...Mera Bharat Mahaan!

To avoid such incidents, which sometimes may not be exactly as they are made to be, only ladies should be allowed to occupy seats adjacent to ladies seats especially on long journeys like how they do in long distance luxury buses in India!! But then again there is a slender chance that the female seated on the adjacent seat could be a lesbian!!!!

He groped her three times!!! What was her husband doing? If she has not cooperated first time groping she wid have raised alarm!!no one is dared to touch a lady when her husband is there. I think she must have asked this man to touch her and the man refused thatswhy she created a story. Same thing happens in some places in gulf region. If a woman calls a man and man afraid to go she creates a story and the man gets severe punishment.

In Washington hearing within 3months, sentenced to 9 months and fined USD 5000.
If it was in India hearing after 9 years, sentence 3 months and fine only RS 500.

    R.Fernandes,
Rapes happen in almost every country. As per stats US is way above India for rapes.

A US man ran a Orphanage and raped young kids for years!!

The sad part is people get away with it with easy minimal punishments. Case by case the law needs to be stringent and the right severe action needs to be taken. Which does not happen in India.

In US, most cases are reported while in India most cases are NOT REPORTED ( hence not in ur stats) due to the attached social stigma...The attitude needs a major change here.
