Karkala, Jan 26: Vikram Hegde was elected as the Karkala Taluk Panchayat (TP) president for the term of 20 months while Mohini S Kumar was elected as the vice-president at an election held on Wednesday. The duo was elected unanimously.

Subhash Kamath and Sundar B proposed the name of Vikram Hegde. Sumati Rao and Srimati V Shetty proposed the name of Mohini S Kumar for the post of the vice-president. As no other nominations were filed, assistant commissioner Madan G Nayak, who was the returning officer for the election, announced that Vikram Hegde and Mohini S Kumar were elected as president and vice-president of the TP, respectively.

Vikram Hegde, who contested for the TP election when he was the president of Neere Gram Panchayat, grew as a popular peoples' representative at a young age because of his people centric working style. He has been serving as an active member of RSS, secretary of Kanajar Village Welfare Committee and the vice-president of Bailoor Maitri Seva Sangh. He has successfully organised various programmes under the Janajagruti Samiti in Karkala and Dharmastala village development project. He is the one to have initiated the new tradition of observing mass diwali by bringing the villagers together and lighting lamps for Bharathmata.

Vikram Hegde, Subhash Kamath, Uday Kotian and Harish Poojary were the aspirants for the post of the president, reserved for general category. As Harish Poojary and Uday Kotian withdrew from the contest, it was expected, that Subhash Kamath and Vikram Hegde will be involved in a neck to neck race for the coveted post. However, the party leaders who met at a meeting held in the morning at the party office, chose Vikram Hegde for the post of the president.
Mohini S Kumar was elected to the TP from Miyyar constituency while being the member of Miyyar Gram Panchayat.
