Karkala, Jan 24: The annual feast of "St Lawrence" at Attur near here was off to a solemn beginning with the Eucharistic celebration at 9.30 am on Tuesday January 24.  Fr Vincent D’Souza, Alangar, Fr Richard Coelho, Udyavar, Fr John D’Souza, Mukamar and Fr Alex Noronha of Kulshekar offered the solemn Eucharistic celebration.  Hundreds of devotees participated in the Eucharistic celebration.

                                                                                                                       

Earlier a special prayer session and mass for the sick and ailing on Monday January 23 at 3 pm.  Fr Basil Vas, parish priest, Our Lady of Dolours Church of Bela, offered the mass.

                                                              

The church premises and the surrounding areas are already jam packed with devotees thronging in thousands, vendors pitching their tents at the feet of St Lawrence who has never abandoned them. Watermelons and 'Tambdde Gulle' (special colour balls with a sugar coat) have already hit the stands at the fair.

                                                            

Bishop Lawrence Mukkuzhy of Beltangady will celebrate the solemn festive mass at 6 pm on Tuesday evening.  “Yaksharanga” artistes of Bangady will stage a yakshagana on the life of St Lawrence at 2 am on Wednesday January 25.

                                                             

Speaking exclusively to Daijiworld correspondent at the Media Centre established at Attur, parish priest Fr Francis Cornelio said that all the necessary arrangements have been done for the 3 day celebrations.  He further said that this year a huge turnout of the devotees is expected owing to a government holiday on Thursday January 26.
