Man walks 40km through forest with pregnant wife on shoulder

KOTTAYAM, Jun 11 (PTI): In an effort to save his pregnant wife and their child, a man walked through forest for about 40km in heavy rains carrying the ailing woman on his shoulders to get her to a hospital, but failed to save the baby.

The tribal youth, Ayyappan, carrying his seven-month pregnant wife, Sudha set off for the hospital from the Konni forests on Tuesday last by about 6am in heavy rains.

Ayappan walked to Kokkathod, said to be about 40km from the place he was staying in the forest, and then managed to get a jeep to take his wife to Pathnamthitta district hospital by 6pm from where she was referred to Kottayam medical college hospital as she had convulsions.

"The woman's life had been saved since she was carried all the way, but the baby could not be saved. Labour was induced for the delivery of the dead foetus," Dr Kunjamma Roy, head of the Gynaecology department of the Kottayam Medical college hospital told PTI. The delivery was on Wednesday and the mother is recovering, she said.

When the woman was brought to the hospital, she had oedema, high blood pressure and convulsions. Convulsions during pregnancy can affect both mother and child, Dr Roy said.

The couple were living in the Konni forests and eked out a living by selling honey and various other products from the forest.

As media reports came in about the couple, offers of financial assistance have started pouring in.

As I look at the picture, I can still see that he is holding his wife's hand (perhaps to console her for the death of baby). He gave All of his physical and mental energy to save his wife and child. What a noble act of love. I too am the recepient of such great love because my husband is one such human being. Thank God for men like these.

while this incident brings out the true concern and selfless caretaking towards his wife it is also a reflection of the pathetic state of lives lived even in a place like kerala which is arguably cent per cent literate as well as made its mark in economic progress. not to be able to get medical assistance within an area of 40 kms!
What is commendable is that this gentleman has proved to be a thorough 'gentle' and a true man. May your tribe increase!

God bless these couples.now that they are in limelight,it is state govt responsibility to give a shelter.
I dont understand some people blaming congress.y do u politicize every matter, ruling 50or 60 years of India ,should Indian governement cut all these forests n build houses. There are so many factors to consider, one should not blame any parties for everything.Just use common sense if we Aam aadmi blame for each and everything,it ll be like the story of boy and wolf.Boy scaring villagers saying wolf attacked, but when wolf really attacks noone was for his rescue.Similar issues will happen to us,if we blame for all.Pin out prominent issues.Dont make politicians think about us,crying is common problem of aam janatha.

There is difference between them and you. They were helpless. No one around to care. No food/vehicle/infrasture/friends/relatives. Just be in their shoes and you will know the difference. At least you have others around you along with other necessities. These couple don't have anything. They just lost their baby. How painful it is just imagine. Only few in this world is lucky to have less pain and difficulties. Majority of us have one or the other problems. Its a hard reality.

    dont judge only by doha/mangalore.
for every person there are problems. we dont know how they have come up in life.
and everyone has heart and love comes to every let him be poor, middle class or rich.
whether he stays in forest, village, town or city. love is love man.
here i just commented on love not on his poverty.i just meant to say love can come to anyone and they will be happy when they love someone who loves them.

Love for his young wife and the fear of losing his only companion whom he must be having immense amount of love and affection. Really my eyes watered when I read this, but I am grateful to God that he saved his companion. Just look at the picture where Mr. Ayyaapan sitting next to his young wife and I could clearly see the concern and love for her in his eyes. I salute you Mr.Ayyappan, and I am sure you are one among those billions who has dared to show this much of courage to save a human life.

When you love someone deeply you go to any extent to save them from the difficulties. This is what this poor Ayyappan did to save his wife and child. We pray with God to bless this couple one more healthy and long living child again. Looking at other way around regarding infrastructure we developed in remote area is far from reality. This person was forced to walk 40 KM by carrying his pregnant wife on his shoulder means absolutely no proper road network leading to his resident place. Hope, Kerala Government will look after this problem in this area very soon

This is a true example for the elite and modern class of married people that never let go off your better half in times of difficulties. This man carried his love and his true wealth to safety. No regrets child is lost but the better half is safe, hale and hearty. This should be a true example to the modern society.
