GOPIO to honour American charity, three others


Washington, Apr 6 (IANS): The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has selected AmeriCares, the non-profit global health and disaster relief organization, for its Service to India Award.

The Connecticut Chapter of the community organisation would present the award to the charity that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world at its annual awards banquet on April 20 at the Italian Centre, Stamford.

Three Indian Americans will also be honoured for service to the community and/or India or the society at large, according to a GOPIO release

In 2006, AmeriCares deepened its commitment to India by establishing a local presence in Mumbai. AmeriCares India today responds to emergency medical needs and delivers medical aid to health care providers in 26 Indian states and union territories.

AmeriCares India continues to expand its reach with free mobile medical clinics that provide access to health care in the Mumbai slums.

Dr. Ramamurti Shankar, John Randolph Huffman Professor of Physics and Professor of Applied Physics Yale University, New Haven will be recognized for his contribution to Basic Sciences.

Shankar works on the application of Quantum Field Theory to particle, statistical and condensed matter physics in which he has over 100 publications.

Rakesh Narang, President and Founder of Wire & Plastic Machinery Corporation, New Haven, Connecticut, will be recognized in the category of Entrepreneurship and Business Acumen. His company is a leading global equipment supplier for the wire and cable industry.

Suresh Sharma, founder of Milan Cultural Association, Hartford, Connecticut has been selected for community service. Sharma founded Milan to create visibility of Indian American community for mainstream America and a legacy not of diversified regionalism but of cultural heritage and unity in diversity.
