Wharton regrets confusion over Modi invite

Washington, Mar 5 (PTI): Ending its silence, Wharton School has backed the organising committee of Wharton India Economic Forum (WIEF) on cancelling the address of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, but regretted the confusion caused as a result of the change in program.

"The student organisers of the upcoming Wharton India Economic Forum have announced that they have cancelled the proposed keynote address by Narendra Modi," the Wharton School said in a statement yesterday.

"We appreciate the efforts our students have put forth in organising this event and regret any confusion that may have been caused by the change in program," Wharton School said.

Since its inception in 1996, the meet has emerged as one of the largest and most prestigious India-focused business conferences that provides a platform for leaders to discuss the opportunities present in India and the challenges that need to be addressed.

Following "furious" protest from a section of university professors and Indian Americans in the country, WIEF in a statement on Sunday had cancelled its invitation to Narendra Modi for delivering address to its annual event on March 23 via video-conference.

A spokesman of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) in New Delhi yesterday said that WIEF has invited Activist and politician Arvind Kejriwal to replace Narendra Modi as the keynote speaker.

However, a WIFE spokesman, said that no such announcement has been made in this regard so far.

Earlier keynote speakers have included former president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Varun Gandhi and industrialist Anil Ambani.

I have not replaced Modi: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Mar 5 (IANS): Amid reports that the Wharton School has invited Arvind Kejriwal as a replacement to Gujarat Chief Minister for a lecture, the AAP leader Tuesday said his address at the US management college has "absolutely nothing to do" with the BJP leader.

The abrupt cancellation Sunday of the invitation to Modi to speak via videoconference at annual Wharton India Economic Forum in Philadelphia came after a war of words between Modi supporters and detractors.

"I have not replaced anyone. They were in touch with me for 10-15 days. The decision to not invite Modi was taken one or two days back," he said.

Kejriwal will deliver his lecture via videoconference March 23, the day he is set to sit on an indefinite hunger strike against rising power and water bills in Delhi.

More than 100 riots happened in UP/ Assam / Maharashtra in 2012 and more than 1000 innocent people lost their life. Why there are two yard sticks, one for Modi and one for other CM's. Make them also culpable for their inability to stop the riots. Not only Nitish, Raman Singh and even Naveen Patnayak did the best with the support of BJP. Who becomes PM it is up to the party who gets the majority but I am against curbing the freedom of speech by a most vibrant democracy, even a contrarian has a right to air his views.

How can you say Modi gave riot free Gujarat when there were major riots in 2002 while he was in power. and have you forgotten about ahmedabad bomb blasts. If he has done development oriented governance then Nitish Kumar scores more than him. Why dont you support Nitish Kumar for PMs post. Dont just get carried away by the hype created by Modi's PR correct your facts first. I am not a supporter of BJP neither of Congress and any other party for that matter. I dont think you have read my other comments.

if you say after 2002 there were no riots then it is a same case like a robber saying i will conduct a robbery once and after that I will not do anything wrong in my life.

To all those who think BJP will win next elections and Narendra Modi will become the PM. It is time to wake up from your dreams and think realistic. In India there are 20% Muslims. Do you think they will vote for Modi? In the remaining 80% 10% are other minorities including Christians. Do u think Modi will get votes from them? In remaining 70% more than 45% are of lower caste, SC/ST etc who vote for BSP, SP,RJD etc. say about 15% from West Bengal will for Mamta Banergee Or CPM. Andhra people will vote for either DMK or AIDMK or other regional parties. So tell me now where does BJP stand in this? and Where is Modi? I havent calculated Congress whihc is the big opposition for BJP

It is a fact that for atleast next 25 years India will be ruled by coalition government. No party will get majority

Ismail, If Adani group is sponsoring the event what is the problem? If there is any illegality, let Central government which is having CBI etc investigate and book the culprits. The problem is now a days Ismail/common man/ media ets knows more than what CBI & Central govt knows ( What a shame)!. Mean time who is sponsoring Raja/ Kalmadi/ Vadra/DLF/ Helicopter deal etc? When Congress is in power they should not make any allegations, they must order enquiry and tell the truth. Otherwise they are are not suitable to run the government. Again they must clear the doubts about their associates/ ministers corruption charges also, by a independent investigation team. Now blaming modi is not correct, as central government not proved anything. The opinion what you are having against Modi, same way we have many opinions against Congress and its leaders. Ball is in Central govt court, which must clear the doubts which is there in our mind.

Dear Vincy, I don't want to repeat my words again. Know your facts right!. First, university not invited Modi to USA. They asked him to address by video conference. Modi not applied for visa 2nd time.Second, Modi is not keen to visit any of these countries you mentioned. If modi applies for visa and then it is rejected your argument is correct. If I don't want to visit you, whether you welcome me or not is immeterial. Once a person is democratically elected and not a single court convicted him you cant apply rules as per your opinion. I myself having opinion that many of congress leaders are communal and commited many riots and killed many innocents, but it is of no value as nothing has been proved in court. Khangress is very much interested to send Kalmadi to foreign countries to represent IOC. It is very keen to send seperatist leaders from Kashmir to Pakistan to meet Terrorists. It does not say single word of support to Kashmir Pandits. It does not explain how 3000 only sikhs butchered under Rajiv Gandhi nose.

Probably Wharton university realized that in a serious debate there is no place for a comedy show which is why they cancelled Modiji's comedy show. Maybe later on he might be invited for some B grade comedy show. However, one point confuses me and that is whenever any western government comes out with a pro Modi statement then the BJP shouts from over the roof tops congratulating itself but whenever something like a rejection of Modi happens then they say that they are not bothered by what the west says, or that they don't care, or that it is insignificant. I simply don't understand this double speak. Why this Kolaveri?

As everyone knows India is much criticized by western world for its filth, poverty, injustice, and third world conditions. State of Gujarat is also no exception for this. Is to true that the biggest economies like EU/ UK/ German/ Japan consults thriving to meet Modi?!!!!! These are choreographed, heavily politicized, and stage-managed things. Whom this people are trying to fool? Modi himself incapable to control and get rid of mal-nourishment and riot in his state how can he advise others ?Gulf construction field receives large number of labors from Gujarat along with rajasthani, bihari and Punjabi.Thank God kannadigas are very rare!!!!!!Here I proud to say Karnataka is better than Gujarat in providing employment to people. Modi model of governance is the rich people get richer, while the common man suffers. You are not aware of many things about the worldwide opinion on Modi .He cannot travel to many countries in the world due to his own statements and not because of Patels.
He was earlier invited to USA by his own Patels, and the embassy rejected his official visa application and also dismissed his business visa which was valid. All of a sudden the people who invited him started disowning him openly in the media in USA.Followed by this the Patels in UK disowned him and UK embassy openly announced no entry for Modi.I still say that these leaders created havoc in the country by posing Muslims as threat to the nation and thus got elected.
