US blizzard leaves 10 dead and thousands without electricity

New York, Feb 10 (PTI): A "record-breaking" winter-storm battered northeast US and Canada, killing at least 10 people, burying some areas in nearly three feet of snow and leaving upto 7 lakh homes without heat and electricity.

The gigantic midwinter storm buried the Northeast in snow, leaving behind a debilitated and disoriented region digging through plump white drifts and reeling from gale-force winds, the New York Times reported.

The blizzard set record snowfall in Portland, Maine, with nearly 32 inches, while parts of Connecticut got more than three feet of snow, bringing everything to a standstill.

The mammoth storm left roads clogged, airports shut, snapping of power lines and forcing more than half-a-million customers without power, including 400,000 in Massachusetts, 186,000 in Rhode Island, and about 39,000 in Connecticut.

"This has been a record-breaking storm," Connecticut Governor Dannel P Malloy was quoted as saying by local media.

The cleanup "will go on for a number of days; this will not all be done today," Malloy said, adding that heating centers were being set up in areas without power.

Yesterday, as many as 2,200 flights were cancelled, taking the number of such cancellation to about 5,800 for over past two days, according to FlightAware. More cancellations are expected for today.

Boston's Logan International Airport and Bradley International Airport in Connecticut, remained shut down.

The snow-storm contributed in Seven deaths in US alone. One of the victims was an 11-year-old Boston boy who died from carbon monoxide poisoning, as he was helping his father shovel snow and took a break to warm up in a car.

Authorities warned residents to make sure home-heating vents were cleared of snow, saying a number of people had been taken to the hospital for carbon-monoxide inhalation.

Several rescued motorists in Connecticut were treated for hypothermia, state officials said.

Safe & souund. All cars were off the raods by 4 PM by utive order so that ploughs could get the roads cleared.

A beautiful clear sunny day Sunday. Roads are clear to drive but below normal speed. Normal conditions set to take tomorrow(Monday) morning as it is back to school & work for everybody.

Took an hour to clear driveway & dig out car, which is normal time in these conditions. New Englanders are used & prepared for theses conditions which are NORMAL this time of the year, except last year when we were spared!!

Thank you so much, Mr. Joe Britto, for your kind and detailed observation on Global Climate Change and outlining various reasons and drawbacks that lead us to so many catastrophic situations all over the world, including U.S.A.

Global Climate change is an important yet crucial issue that everyone is fully aware but are reluctant to expose the possible dangers because no one has a solution when the populated world is moving forward with so much of industrialisation as well as consumption that triggers so much of emission in the atmosphere. Throughout the year of 2012 we had active participation of election campaigns and debates, and sadly enough the topic on Climate change had absolutely no room for discussion.

Few months ago, we travelled by road thousands of miles thru so many widespread farmlands in Canada and the United States where due to lack of water and lack of timely rain millions of acres of green land with varied crops are turning brown in color with no scope to reap any fruits or harvest.

We whispered for many hours of our road journey with prayers and concerns within ourselves not knowing what God has in store for all of us in this "small world - a beautiful world".

In our farmland of India so many herds of elephants are destroying our rice fields and even hurting our banana plantation and cardamoms. Huge wild elephants show up in the plantation causing havoc to labor force.

The United States fortunately facing the calamities boldly and doing everything in their power to help hundreds of thousands of people who are either powerless or homeless or both.

May God have mercy on us all, and may God help this planet earth with peace and harmony with normal climates so that we may all earn consistency in our daily life of survival.

Once again, thank you for your frank comments and researchful observations.

The past few years have seen the drastic changes in climate , weather and rainfall patterns world over. The reasons for the changes may or may not be entyirely man made , but there is without much doubt that the 10 major cause for global warming
    are :
    1. Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants.

2.Carbon dioxide emissions from burning gasoline for transportation.
3.Methane emissions from animals, agriculture such as rice paddies, and from Arctic seabeds.
    4. Deforestation, especially tropical forests for wood, pulp, and farmland.
5.Increase in usage of chemical fertilizers on croplands.
    6. Due to Global warmimng effect rise in sea levels worldwide.
    6.More killer storms.
    8. Massive crop failures.
    9.Widespread extinction of species.
    10 Disappearance of coral reefs.

The recent United Nations Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar, took place from 26 November to 8 December 2012 ended in a stalemate with the following conclusions:

    1. The Kyoto Protocol was reauthorized for another eight years, though fewer countries signed on so it now only covers some 12 percent of global emissions.

2.The countries ended the negotiating track created in 2007 on “Long-term Cooperative Action,” which previously produced the Copenhagen Accords and the Cancun Agreements that drew up voluntary pollution-reduction commitments covering 80 percent of global emissions.
    3. The new negotiating track on the “Durban Platform for Enhanced Action”—which was designed last year to produce by 2015 a new treaty that is applicable to all parties and covers 100 percent of global emissions—took its first steps toward achieving those goals

To summarise the whole scenierio shifts to 2015 and further to 2020 , with none really showing any seriousness of dealing with the issues headon. The reasons are easy to guess as policy changes or reduction /elimination in use of fossil fuels and 8 reasons is not acceptable to any country/zone, although alternatives are well known.
