US Senate Votes for New Sanctions on Iran

Washington, Dec 1 (IANS/RIA Novosti): The US Senate voted Friday to impose broader sanctions on Iran targeting the country's domestic industries.

The package will designate Iran's energy, port, shipping and ship-building sectors as entities of proliferation.

The new sanctions will also blacklist the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and its president as "human rights abusers" for broadcasting forced televised confessions and show trials.

Tehran is currently under several packages of Western-backed sanctions, including EU-brokered oil embargo that came into effect July 1.

The West led by the US suspects Iran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons programme, but the Islamic Republic says it needs nuclear power solely for electricity generation.
