New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS): The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the Indian Railways if there was a non-technical job available for a girl who lost both her legs in a train accident at Rajiv Chowk Metro station in March 2010.

The victim's legs were amputated after they were crushed by a train in the accident.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher also sought Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) reply on whether it could provide prosthetic limbs of high quality to the girl.

"DMRC to report back if it is in a position to provide prosthetic limbs with silicon padding of international stature to the girl," Justice Shakdher said.

The court, while passing the order, said the plea of the girl, seeking Rs.50 lakh as compensation would be dealt with at a later stage, and posted the matter for next hearing Jan 3, 2013.

The court's order came on a plea filed by Mehjabeen seeking Rs.50 lakh compensation for the loss of limbs and a government job as part of rehabilitation.

In her petition, Mehjabeen had also sought the court's intervention for improving the safety of the general public at Metro stations, including the availability of ambulance services at each of the busy stations.

"Security personnel should be deployed at all stations to manage surging crowds. The customer service staff and other personnel should be trained to deal with situations of emergency - a common feature of major Metro stations across the globe," the petition said.

At the time of the accident, Mehjabeen, a student of journalism, along with her mother Ayesha, was waiting for the metro train when a man rushing through the crowd landed on the tracks, taking her along. She fell in front of a train.

Mehjabeen in her plea said that with the help of an NGO, she has been fitted with artificial legs and was able to walk seven months after the incident.

However, neither DMRC nor the government have offered her a job to be self-reliant.

However, DMRC has offered her Rs.four lakh as compensation.
