Man Jailed for Planning to Bomb US Capitol

Washington, Nov 2 (IANS): A man in the US has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after he confessed to have planned crashing explosive-laden model airplanes into federal buildings, Xinhua reported.

Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, planned to use rigged cellphones to detonate the improvised devices to bomb the Pentagon and the US Capitol. His plea bargain with prosecutors helped him to avoid a much longer sentence.

Ferdaus, a man of Moroccan descent, grew up in the US state of Massachusetts. He was arrested back in February near the US Capitol in Washington, D.C., as part of an anti-terrorism investigation by the FBI.

He was planning a suicide attack on the Capitol with explosives that he received from undercover officers, whom he thought were associates of Al-Qaeda. He also planned to deliver bomb-making materials for use in attacks against the US troops in Iraq.
