Anuradha Ramam to Take Indian Weaves to San Francisco


New Delhi, Apr 8 (IANS): India is focusing on hi-street boom and the West is showing interst in Indian handloom and designer Anuradha Ramam will give it a boost by showcasing her collection made with weaves like ikat and kantha in San Francisco.

The designer will present her collection in the form of a fashion show April 14.

"I am very contented to see that Indian handloom, weaves and textiles are becoming so popular in the Eest. This large scale show is my attempt to reach out to a wider audience and educate them about our rich history of textiles and weaves like ikat, kantha and telia roomal," Ramam told IANS.

"While India is going through luxury and hi-street boom, west is looking at India and absorbing our sensibilities in every aspect. I am excited with the fabulous response I am getting before the show on my collection," Ramam told IANS.

Her collection will be a mix of handwoven fabrics in riot of colours.

"The collection will be a mix of handwoven and kantha saris embedded with mirror work; handblocked and embroidered stoles and tunics, which are specially created for NRIs and American clientele. The collection offers 'tradition with a contemporary touch'," she said.

Ramam, whose clientele boasts of names including actress Kiron Kher, socialites Dolly Thakore and Lushin Dubey, as also Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat, supports over 350 women weavers in West Bengal and 200 weavers in Andhra Pradesh.
