Goa to introduce QR code rate cards for taxis

Panaji, Oct 1: The Goa Transport Department will introduce QR code-based rate cards for taxis within 15 days, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho announced on Thursday.

Godinho said the system would reduce the dependence on physical meters and save taxi operators from making frequent visits to government offices for meter-related issues.

He made the announcement while launching the revised taxi fare card at Dabolim International Airport. The new fare structure, introduced after five years, replaces the 2021 rates with a point-to-point, distance-based system covering different vehicle categories.

Under the revised structure, yellow-black taxis will charge a minimum of Rs 300 for the first three kilometres for sedans and Rs 400 for SUVs. For distances between 3.1 km and 8 km, the fare will be Rs 430 for sedans and Rs 560 for SUVs, followed by additional per-kilometre charges. A 35% night surcharge will apply between 11 pm and 5 am.

Godinho said the QR code would allow passengers and operators to access the applicable fare without manually calculating rates per kilometre.

He also said Dabolim and Manohar International Airport in Mopa would continue to operate simultaneously. He said Dabolim would not close as South Goa's economy and hotels depend on the airport, while efforts were being made to attract charter flights.

The minister said the government was also working to improve facilities at Dabolim, including restrooms, parking and overhead passenger bridges.

Godinho credited the United Taximen Union Association for raising the demand for the fare revision and said the government would continue working with taxi operators on airport connectivity and welfare measures.
