Los Angeles, Sep 30: The sprawling Game of Thrones universe is set to make its big-screen debut with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, which Warner Bros has scheduled for theatrical release on June 6, 2029.
The film will take viewers several centuries before the events of the original series and focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who united much of Westeros and established the Targaryen dynasty that ruled the Seven Kingdoms for generations.
Owen Harris will direct the film, while Beau Willimon has been appointed writer. No details have yet been announced about the cast or who will portray Aegon.
Aegon I was the first Targaryen king of Westeros and launched the conquest that transformed the continent. Riding Balerion the Black Dread, he set out with his sisters and wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, to bring the warring kingdoms under Targaryen rule.
The film is expected to focus on Aegon’s conquest, although further plot details remain under wraps. His story marks the beginning of the Targaryen dynasty that eventually produced Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, several centuries later.
The story also connects with the history explored in HBO's House of the Dragon, which centred on the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Another spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, takes place later in the franchise's timeline.
The original Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy novels, ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019 and became one of television's most successful series, winning multiple Emmy Awards.
Harris is already associated with the franchise as an executive producer on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and as a director of several episodes of its first season. His other credits include Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone and Brave New World.
Willimon is best known as the creator and showrunner of House of Cards and has also worked as a writer on Disney+ series Andor.
Meanwhile, the Game of Thrones universe continues to expand on television. House of the Dragon is set to return for its fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season.
