Panaji, Sep 27: The Goa Transport Department has proposed a major expansion of its AI-based traffic camera network to strengthen enforcement of traffic rules and make monitoring more technology-driven across the state.

Under the proposed plan, 701 additional AI cameras will be installed at 68 locations, expanding the existing network of 348 cameras currently operational at 26 locations.

According to the proposed plan, each location will have a minimum of four and a maximum of 15 cameras. Nagao Junction and Betim-Porvorim will have the highest allocation of 15 cameras each, while 14 cameras each have been proposed at O'Coqueiro Circle, MES Junction and Valles Junction in Dabolim.

Twelve cameras each are proposed at several key traffic points, including Court Junction, Pernem Market, Kasarwada Junction, Nerul, Calangute Sea Junction, St Inez Junction, Mapusa-Anjuna Junction, Assagao, Saligao, Tisk Junction, Porvorim and Betoda Junction.

At present, AI cameras are operational at 26 locations across Goa. Transport Department data shows that the cameras have detected 10,41,958 traffic violations since they were introduced. Of these, 5,684 cases have resulted in e-challans, while notices have been issued in 81 cases.

The department expects the expanded network to enable automated detection of traffic violations, quicker enforcement action and more effective monitoring of road discipline.

The newly opened Porvorim elevated corridor will also soon have AI-based and speed-detection cameras. Four cameras have been proposed along the corridor — one at the entry point, one at the exit and two in the middle section.

The cameras will continuously monitor speed limits and other traffic violations along the elevated corridor.

Meanwhile, work is also underway to install rumblers and additional directional signboards as part of road-safety measures. A new access route near Azad Bhavan has also been proposed for motorists travelling from Porvorim towards Atal Setu.
