Porvorim, Sep 6: Placing trust in a newly appointed maid proved costly for a woman after gold jewellery and cash worth around Rs 30 lakh were allegedly stolen from her bungalow in Porvorim on Friday.

According to police, the complainant had gone to a temple in Porvorim for darshan, leaving the maid alone at home. When she returned, she found the main door open and the maid missing.

Suspecting a burglary, the complainant checked the cupboards and discovered that gold jewellery worth around Rs 27 lakh and cash of approximately Rs 3 lakh were missing. She subsequently informed the Porvorim police.

Police sources said the woman had started working at the complainant’s house only two days earlier and had claimed to be from Betim. However, the complainant had not obtained her full name, residential address or identity documents at the time of hiring her.

During the investigation, police found that no woman matching the maid’s description appeared to have been residing in the Betim area.

Porvorim police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Police Sub-Inspector Sachin Shirodkar is conducting further investigations into the theft and efforts are underway to trace the accused.
