Goa, Sep 4: In a dominant display of skill and sportsmanship, host team Pilar Seminary powered past opponents Rachol Seminary in an emphatic 4–0 victory to win the Fr Agnel Fellowship Cup at the Fr Agnel Football Ground on September 2.
The traditional friendly football match kicked off with grand fanfare as chief guest Yatish Dempo arrived alongside a galaxy of distinguished guests, including Akshaya Vernekar, Fr Steevan D’Souza (vicar general of the Society of Pilar), Rev Donato Rodrigues (rector of Rachol Seminary), and Indian football legend Muhammad Ali. Welcomed by rousing applause and a vibrant performance from the seminarians' brass band, the dignitaries were escorted to the stage by Fr Norman Almeida, rector of Pilar Seminary, who presented them with floral bouquets.
From the opening whistle, Pilar Seminary set a blistering pace. Exhibiting brilliant tactical cohesion and razor-sharp execution, Pilar surged ahead early, netting three goals in the first half to build a formidable 3–0 cushion before the break.
During the interval, spectators were treated to dynamic cultural performances by the Fr Agnel Niketan Boys and the Minor Seminarians, keeping the crowd's spirits soaring.
Rachol Seminary emerged for the second half determined to turn the tide. Despite launching several spirited attacks, they were repeatedly thwarted by Pilar’s rock-solid defensive line. Pilar capped off their masterclass by slotting home a fourth goal to seal a comprehensive victory. The goal scorers for Pilar were Rafael Soren, Daniz Vaz, Pritam Lakra, and Ambrosius Lyngdoh.
"The spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship on display today reflects the true essence of this fellowship," said chief guest Yatish Dempo during the closing ceremony, where he presented the championship trophy to Pilar Seminary and the runner-up trophy to Rachol Seminary. Individual honours were also awarded, with Raphael Soren named most valuable player, Kuldeep Ekka named best defender, and Luis Rodrigues of Rachol Seminary recognized as best goalkeeper.
