Can quitting sugar sharpen your jawline? Here’s what doctors say

New Delhi, Aug 17: Giving up sugar is often promoted as a quick way to achieve a sharper jawline or slimmer-looking face. However, reducing added sugar may influence facial appearance only indirectly and does not specifically target facial fat, according to Dr Richa Chaturvedi, Senior Consultant, Endocrinologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi.

“When people reduce sugary drinks, desserts and highly processed foods, they may naturally consume fewer calories,” Dr Chaturvedi said. “This can contribute to overall weight loss over time, which may eventually make the face appear leaner.”

Why the face may look slimmer

Reducing sugary and highly processed foods may produce some changes even before significant fat loss occurs.

Diets high in refined carbohydrates and processed foods can influence fluid balance. Cutting back on them may reduce fluid retention in some people, making the cheeks and jawline appear temporarily more defined.

“This reduction in fluid retention can sometimes make the cheeks and jawline appear more defined,” Dr Chaturvedi explained. “However, this should not be confused with specifically losing facial fat.”

In other words, a visible change in facial puffiness does not necessarily mean that a significant amount of facial fat has been lost.

You cannot target facial fat

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding facial slimming is that a particular food or diet can make the body burn fat from a specific area.

“Fat loss does not happen selectively from one area of the body,” Dr Chaturvedi said. “Where a person loses fat first or most noticeably depends on several factors, including genetics, age, hormones and overall body composition.”

Reducing added sugar can help create the calorie deficit required for weight loss, but it cannot direct the body to burn fat specifically from the cheeks, chin or jawline.

“Dietary changes cannot selectively burn fat from the face or change the underlying structure of the jawbone,” she added.

What happens to the skin?

The effects of excess sugar also extend beyond weight and facial fat.

Persistently elevated glucose levels can contribute to glycation, a process in which sugar molecules interact with proteins in the body. Collagen and elastin, which help maintain skin firmness and elasticity, can be affected.

“Persistently elevated glucose levels can contribute to glycation, in which sugar molecules interact with proteins in the body,” Dr Chaturvedi explained.

Over time, changes associated with glycation can affect the quality and structure of these proteins. This highlights the relationship between dietary quality, metabolic health and skin health.

However, reducing added sugar should not be regarded as a miracle anti-ageing treatment.

“Reducing excess added sugar can support overall metabolic and skin health, but it is not an anti-ageing treatment on its own,” she said.

Not all sugar is the same

Experts also distinguish between added sugars and naturally occurring sugars in nutritious foods.

“The naturally occurring sugars in whole fruits and dairy come alongside nutrients such as fibre, vitamins, minerals or protein, depending on the food,” Dr Chaturvedi said.

Added sugars are commonly found in sweets, sugary beverages, desserts and many highly processed foods. These can significantly increase calorie intake without offering the same nutritional benefits.

Therefore, completely eliminating every source of sugar is not necessarily necessary.

Is a zero-sugar diet needed?

Rather than attempting to eliminate every gram of sugar, a more sustainable approach is to reduce excess added sugar while maintaining a balanced diet.

“The more useful goal is to reduce added sugar while maintaining a balanced diet,” Dr Chaturvedi said. “A healthy eating pattern should include adequate protein, fibre, whole foods and appropriate hydration rather than simply focusing on what has been removed.”

An extremely restrictive diet can be difficult to sustain and may make healthy eating unnecessarily complicated.

What can help create a more defined face?

A naturally leaner-looking face is more likely to result from broader lifestyle and body-composition changes than from eliminating a single ingredient.

Factors that can influence facial appearance include:

Overall body fat: Gradual and sustainable fat loss can reduce facial fat in people who need to lose weight.
Hydration: Adequate fluid intake supports normal body functions and can help avoid changes associated with dehydration.
Sleep: Poor sleep can affect appetite, energy levels and metabolic health.
Diet quality: A balanced diet based largely on whole foods supports healthy weight management.
Added sugar intake: Cutting back on sugary drinks and highly processed sweet foods can make calorie management easier.
The bottom line

Quitting or substantially reducing added sugar may make some people's faces appear slimmer, particularly if it results in lower calorie intake, gradual overall fat loss or reduced puffiness.

But there is no dietary shortcut that specifically burns fat from the cheeks or jawline.

“As a broader health strategy, reducing excess added sugar is beneficial, but the focus should be on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than expecting a dramatic facial transformation,” Dr Chaturvedi said.

A sharper jawline, when it occurs, is therefore more likely to reflect overall changes in body composition, hydration, sleep and dietary habits than simply cutting out sugar.
