Jaipur, Aug 6: A 25-year-old woman was injured after a portion of the roof of a government hospital collapsed on her in Rajasthan's Churu district on Wednesday, triggering a political controversy with the Congress accusing the BJP government of neglecting public infrastructure and endangering lives.
The incident occurred at around 1.18 pm at the Government Durgadutt Fatehpuria Maternal and Child Hospital in Sujangarh when Kiran Meghwal was leaving the hospital. Part of the porch roof suddenly gave way and fell on her, causing injuries.
Dr Purusottam Karwa, Principal Medical Officer of the hospital, said Meghwal sustained minor injuries and required two stitches.
"We had written to the Public Works Department (PWD) on August 4 seeking repairs. After the incident, we have again requested the department to take immediate action," he said.
Karwa said another portion of plaster had also fallen in one of the hospital rooms but maintained that the issue was not widespread across the facility.
"We have also called a mason to inspect the damaged portion and decide whether it should be demolished or repaired," he added.
The incident drew sharp criticism from the Congress, which alleged that deteriorating public infrastructure reflected the BJP government's negligence.
In a post on social media platform X, the party termed the incident "shameful", stating that people visit hospitals for treatment but government hospitals in Rajasthan were becoming unsafe.
The Congress accused the BJP government of allowing corruption to weaken public infrastructure, claiming that buildings across the state were collapsing due to poor maintenance.
Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra also criticised the state government, saying dilapidated schools, hospitals and public buildings reflected administrative failure.
"Whether it is a school or a hospital, this is the condition everywhere under the BJP government. Dilapidated buildings, crumbling systems and a reckless disregard for public lives have become the norm," he said.
Praying for Meghwal's speedy recovery, Dotasra described the incident as more than just an accident, alleging it exposed corruption, negligence and the collapse of public infrastructure under the present government.
