New Delhi, Aug 3: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday criticised the Opposition for disrupting Parliament proceedings, alleging that members refused to participate in debates on key bills and instead created chaos in both Houses.

Speaking outside Parliament, Rijiju said two important bills were passed on Monday, but Opposition members did not take part in the discussions despite repeated appeals from the government.

“Today, two bills were passed in Parliament. I am saddened that while members supporting the government spoke on these bills, the Opposition did not say anything and only created a ruckus,” he said.

Rijiju claimed that the government had repeatedly urged Opposition MPs to join the debate, but they chose not to participate.

“The saddest part is that there is no one left in the Congress who can make its MPs understand the importance of participating in parliamentary proceedings,” he said.

The Minister said he had personally appealed to senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, to encourage MPs to take part in discussions.

“I requested Mallikarjun Kharge to explain this to Congress MPs, but there is no one in their party who can make them understand,” Rijiju said.

Targeting the Congress, he alleged that the party was avoiding parliamentary debate despite several important bills being introduced.

“They do not participate in discussions and later claim that they are not being allowed to speak in Parliament,” he said.

Rijiju also claimed that members from other Opposition parties, including the CPI(M), wanted to speak in the House but were prevented from doing so due to pressure from the Congress.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026 was passed in the Lok Sabha through a voice vote amid continued Opposition protests.

The legislation was introduced by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal while Opposition MPs raised slogans demanding answers from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action during protests at Jantar Mantar.

Despite repeated appeals from the Chair to maintain order, disruptions continued. The bill was passed by voice vote, following which the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day as protests persisted.
