Washington, Jul 16: US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that an American citizen who had been detained in Iran since December 2024 has been released and is now safely outside the country.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the woman had been freed as a gesture of goodwill by Iran and was in good health.
According to a report by The New York Times in August 2025, the Iranian-American woman was arrested in December 2024 on espionage charges. She reportedly worked for a US technology company and also ran a charity supporting Iranian children before her detention.

The report had earlier stated that although she had been released from prison, her passports had been confiscated, preventing her from leaving the country.
Meanwhile, the family of British national Craig Foreman said his prison sentence in Iran had been extended by two years after he allegedly spoke to the media.
Craig Foreman and his wife, Lindsay Foreman, were arrested in 2025 while travelling through Iran on a motorcycle as part of a round-the-world journey. The couple is serving a 10-year prison sentence on espionage charges, which they deny.
Britain has described the original sentences as "totally unjustifiable."
Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman's son and the family's spokesperson, said the family had been informed that Craig Foreman was taken before a judge and told his sentence had been increased because of his communication with the media.
