Reddit post on AI-led layoffs fuels debate over future of software jobs

New Delhi, Jul 9: A Reddit post claiming that a company laid off most of its software development team after adopting artificial intelligence tools has sparked widespread debate among technology professionals over AI's growing impact on employment.

The anonymous user claimed that nearly 90 per cent of a development team of around 70 employees was laid off, with only eight developers retained.

According to the post, the employee worked for a mid-sized technology services company that had stopped hiring after 2025 and had been witnessing a decline in projects. The user said the layoffs were not entirely unexpected but claimed company executives attributed the workforce reduction to improvements in artificial intelligence.

The post alleged that senior management told the remaining developers they would rely heavily on AI tools, including Claude, to handle the company's existing projects.

The employee admitted that they had previously viewed generative AI as little more than an advanced autocomplete tool but said recent developments had changed that perception and raised concerns about the future of software engineering careers.

The post quickly gained traction on Reddit, prompting mixed reactions from users.

Some argued that companies were using artificial intelligence as a convenient justification for downsizing rather than acknowledging broader business challenges.

One user claimed that citing AI-driven efficiency sounded more favourable than admitting to operational difficulties, while others expressed scepticism about whether AI alone could replace an entire development team.

Several users also encouraged software professionals to continue upgrading their skills, arguing that experienced developers would remain valuable for reviewing, refining and overseeing AI-generated code.

Others expressed sympathy for those affected, describing the reported layoffs as a stark reminder of the uncertainty facing the technology sector as AI adoption accelerates.
