Kochi, Jun 21: The Ernakulam Rural Cyber Police have registered a case against popular vlogger ‘Thoppi’, whose real name is Muhammad Nihad, following a complaint alleging that he posted obscene videos on YouTube and other social media platforms.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by advocate Sreejith Perumana on Saturday, police officials said.

Nihad runs multiple YouTube channels and Instagram accounts, with his main YouTube channel having over one million subscribers. Police said allegations had recently emerged that he uploaded objectionable videos featuring his friends on his social media platforms.

Following the complaint submitted to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and the police, a preliminary inquiry was conducted. A Cyber Police official said investigators examined his social media accounts and found that such videos had been posted.

The officer said a majority of Thoppi’s followers were teenagers and alleged that offensive language was frequently used in his videos. Statements of his friends were also recorded as part of the inquiry before registering the case.

This is not the first time Thoppi has faced police action. In April last year, he was taken into custody for allegedly threatening a private bus crew by pointing an air gun at them near Vadakara in Kozhikode district.

In 2023, he was arrested for allegedly using abusive language in public and creating a traffic disruption in Valanchery, Malappuram district.
