Chennai, May 30: A migrant labourer from Assam was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvallur district after he reportedly misbehaved with a woman, police said on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Prosenjit Das (35), who had travelled to Thiruvallur along with six other labourers from Assam in search of employment. The group was staying in a rented accommodation in the district.

According to the preliminary investigation, Das was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he approached a woman's residence seeking drinking water. Police said he reportedly misbehaved with the woman, prompting her to shut the door and remain inside the house for safety.

Investigators said Das allegedly began damaging the windows of the house with a knife, following which the woman alerted her relatives.

A group comprising her relatives and local residents gathered at the spot and allegedly assaulted Das. He sustained serious injuries in the attack and later succumbed to them.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Further inquiries are underway to identify those involved in the assault and ascertain the sequence of events leading to the labourer's death.
