Hamirpur, May 29: Six labourers lost their lives and three others sustained injuries after a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed over the Betwa river in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district in the early hours of Friday, officials said.
The incident took place around 3 am between Parsani and Kandaur villages when a slab of the bridge being constructed from Maurakandar to Kurara reportedly collapsed following a storm.

According to officials, several labourers engaged in the bridge construction work were sleeping on the upper section of the structure when the slab suddenly gave way.
The deceased were identified as Lokendra (22), Kuldeep Nishad (19), Sawant Yadav (28), Sabhajeet (30), Pushpendra Chauhan (34) and Rajesh Pal (42), police said.
Three other labourers who were trapped beneath a pillar were later rescued from the debris.
The injured workers were shifted to the district hospital in Hamirpur for treatment.
Lalpura Police Station SHO Rajesh Kumar Saroj said the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination, while debris removal operations are continuing to ensure that no other workers remain trapped under the rubble.
