Five labourers killed in soil collapse during well construction in Madhya Pradesh

Panna, May 26: A tragic accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district claimed the lives of five labourers after a sudden soil collapse at an under-construction well in Nayapurwa hamlet of Biharpurwa village under Ajaygarh block on Tuesday morning.

Officials said seven labourers were working at the site when the incident occurred. Two workers had stepped out of the well moments earlier to drink water and were safely rescued, while the remaining five were trapped under a large volume of loose soil that caved in without warning.

Despite urgent rescue operations, all five trapped workers were later confirmed dead. Initially, only one body could be retrieved as teams struggled with unstable soil conditions that hampered digging and recovery efforts.

The deceased have been identified as Chunnu Yadav, Rajkumar Yadav, Ashish Yadav, Chunwad Yadav and Rampal Yadav.

According to officials, the labourers had been engaged for nearly 10 days on a well being constructed on the farmland of local resident Binnu Ahirwar. At the time of the collapse, two workers had just climbed out of the well, narrowly escaping the disaster.

Rescue teams comprising police, revenue officials and district administration personnel rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information, but continued soil instability made the operation extremely difficult.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns over safety standards and technical oversight in rural infrastructure work carried out under local Gram Panchayat supervision.

District Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Panna district confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating that five labourers died after the soil suddenly caved in during well construction, while two others were rescued in time.

Preliminary observations suggest that the soil at the excavation site was loose and unstable, making deep digging highly risky without proper structural support or geological assessment.

Experts have warned that well-digging in such conditions without safety measures like soil testing, shoring, or protective reinforcement can lead to fatal collapses.

The district administration has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident and senior officials have visited the site to monitor rescue and relief operations.

Authorities have also assured financial assistance and support to the families of the deceased in accordance with government relief norms, while the village remains in shock over the loss of lives.
