New Delhi, May 26: Doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences have stressed the importance of early detection of Preeclampsia during pregnancy and called for greater awareness among pregnant women and their families about the seriousness of the condition.
Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal and newborn illness during pregnancy and is commonly associated with high blood pressure. The condition can affect multiple organs, including the kidneys, liver, brain and placenta.
Speaking to Akashvani News on the occasion of World Preeclampsia Day, Dr Neena Malhotra said that if the condition is not detected in time, it can lead to seizures, stroke, organ failure, premature birth and even death of both mother and baby.

Dr Malhotra said preeclampsia can often be screened during the first trimester of pregnancy. She noted that women identified at risk can benefit from preventive treatment, which may significantly reduce the chances of developing severe preeclampsia and lower complications for both mother and child.
She also highlighted the importance of regular monitoring of blood pressure, urine protein levels, foetal growth and maternal symptoms for early diagnosis.
Emphasising the need for timely medical intervention, Dr Malhotra said awareness, screening, prevention and prompt treatment are key to effectively tackling preeclampsia.
