New Delhi, May 17: The Delhi Cabinet, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, has approved a reduction in VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in the National Capital Region from 25 per cent to 7 per cent, in a move aimed at stabilising airfares amid global energy supply concerns linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.
An official said the reduced tax rate will initially remain in effect for six months and is expected to help prevent a rise in ticket prices as international oil markets face volatility due to geopolitical disruptions.
The decision comes as part of broader efforts to manage the impact of global fuel fluctuations on domestic aviation costs and passenger fares in the region.

In a separate development, the Chief Minister also participated in a felicitation and bicycle distribution programme held in the R.K. Puram Assembly constituency for meritorious girl students.
At the event, bicycles were distributed to students who had successfully passed Classes 10 and 12, with the aim of improving access to education, safety, and mobility for young girls continuing their academic journey.
Speaking at the programme, the Chief Minister said initiatives supporting girls’ education play a crucial role in strengthening families and building a more empowered society. She described the distribution of bicycles as more than just a transport initiative, calling it a step toward enhancing confidence, independence, and opportunities for students.
The government also announced a larger scheme under which bicycles will be provided to all girls enrolling in Class 9 in government schools. With approximately 1.30 lakh girls enrolling annually, the initiative is expected to support students throughout their schooling, including access to coaching and higher education.
The rollout of the scheme is scheduled to begin after the summer vacation.
The Chief Minister also appreciated local MLA Anil Sharma and the Rotary Club Delhi Imperial for independently distributing bicycles to over 500 students, describing it as an encouraging example of community participation in education support.
She reiterated that the Delhi government is focused on ensuring that no girl is deprived of education due to financial or logistical constraints, emphasising continued investment in facilities and opportunities for female students.
The event was also attended by BJP District President Ravindra Chaudhary and other local representatives.
