Lucknow, May 15: A 25-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh after he allegedly murdered his wife, stuffed her body into a sack and dumped it near a dam before attempting to mislead police by filing a missing person complaint.

The incident was reported from the Chinhat police station area in Lucknow, where the accused, identified as Altaf alias Kallu, allegedly strangled his 24-year-old wife Yasmeen over suspicions that she was involved in an affair with a close relative.

According to police, the couple had been quarrelling frequently over the issue for some time. On the night of the incident, the argument reportedly escalated, following which Altaf allegedly killed his wife.

Investigators said the accused later stuffed Yasmeen’s body into a sack and transported it in a battery-operated rickshaw from Barabanki to Lucknow.

Police said the body was dumped near the Indira Dam under the BBD police station limits in an attempt to conceal the crime.

After disposing of the body, Altaf allegedly walked into a police station and tried to lodge a missing person complaint claiming that his wife had disappeared.

However, police became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in his statements and behaviour during questioning.

During sustained interrogation, Altaf allegedly confessed to murdering Yasmeen and disposing of the body, police said.

Officials later recovered Yasmeen’s body from the sack and sent it for post-mortem examination.

Police have arrested Altaf alias Kallu and registered a case in connection with the murder. Further investigation is underway.
