New Delhi, May 10: Two alleged criminals wanted in connection with a recent firing case were arrested following an encounter with the Delhi Police near Zakir Husain College on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, officials said on Sunday.

The operation was conducted late Saturday night by the Special Staff unit of the Central District Police. The accused, identified as Sahil and Avinash, were apprehended after an exchange of gunfire with the police team.

According to officials, both suspects suffered bullet injuries to their legs during the encounter and were later taken to a hospital, where they remain under treatment and police custody.

Police sources said the two men had been under surveillance for several days and were listed among the Delhi Police’s most-wanted accused in connection with a recent firing incident in Karol Bagh. The case had triggered a large-scale search operation across the capital after shots were allegedly fired in broad daylight.

Investigators said the Special Staff received specific intelligence inputs on Saturday night indicating that the accused could arrive near Zakir Husain College either to meet associates or allegedly carry out another criminal activity.

Following the tip-off, police teams deployed personnel in the area and mounted surveillance around the college premises and nearby roads.

Officials stated that when police attempted to intercept the suspects, the duo allegedly tried to flee and opened fire on the police team.

According to preliminary information, nearly 10 rounds were exchanged during the encounter.

The police team retaliated in self-defence, injuring both accused in the legs before successfully overpowering and arresting them at the scene.

Illegal firearms and live cartridges were reportedly recovered from the spot and are believed to have been used during the exchange of fire.

Delhi Police has initiated a detailed investigation into the criminal history of the accused, including their suspected links to organised gangs and other criminal activities in the city.

Officials are also examining the motive behind the Karol Bagh firing case and probing whether the accused were planning another attack or criminal operation in central Delhi before they were intercepted.
