Amritsar, May 3: The Counter Intelligence wing of the Punjab Police has busted a narcotics smuggling module with the arrest of three operatives and seizure of 12 kg heroin in Amritsar.

The arrested have been identified as Gurjant Singh, Arvinder Singh and Jashanpreet Singh, all residents of Tarn Taran district. Police also impounded a motorcycle allegedly used to transport the contraband.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that Gurjant Singh was in contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler. The accused reportedly received heroin consignments dropped via drones from across the border near his village and later distributed them to his associates.

Sharing operational details, the DGP said that acting on specific intelligence about a fresh consignment, police teams laid special ‘nakas’ (check posts) in the area. The trio was intercepted during transit, leading to the recovery of 12 kg heroin.

He added that further investigations are underway to establish forward and backward linkages and to dismantle the broader network involved in cross-border smuggling.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
