Lucknow, May 1: Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai was hospitalised on Friday after he fainted and his health deteriorated, party sources said.

Rai reportedly experienced severe uneasiness, pain and discomfort while attending a party programme and later lost consciousness. He was rushed to a hospital in Lucknow, where he has been admitted to the emergency ward.

According to the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Indian National Congress, Rai fainted at his residence in the evening due to low sodium levels. Doctors are currently monitoring his condition and conducting necessary medical tests.

A team of doctors is attending to him, and he remains under observation in the emergency unit.

Rai, a prominent political leader from eastern Uttar Pradesh, is a former MLA from Varanasi. He joined the Congress in 2016 after leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party and has since been a key face of the party in the state.

He was appointed as the Uttar Pradesh Congress president in 2023, at a time when the party has been working to strengthen its organisational presence in the state.
