Bridge collapse in Jammu leaves 4 workers feared trapped

Daijiworld Media Network - Jammu

Jammu, May 1: Four workers are feared trapped after a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in the Bantalab area of Jammu on Friday, triggering a rescue operation.

According to former sarpanch Rajdev Singh, six labourers were initially trapped under the debris, out of which two have been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to save the remaining four.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have reached the spot and are carrying out operations using heavy machinery, including JCBs.

Singh said that security personnel and local authorities are present at the site, and all efforts are being made to rescue those trapped at the earliest.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma said the bridge was an old structure undergoing foundation strengthening work. He suggested that excavation and possible vibrations caused by vehicular movement may have led to the collapse.

Rescue operations were continuing at the time of reporting.
