Margao, Apr 30: Margao police have come under scrutiny after releasing a businessman arrested in a counterfeit currency case, with his lawyer alleging illegal detention and seeking compensation.

City-based advocate Showmik Angle claimed that his client was wrongfully detained for six days, causing severe trauma to him and his family. He warned of approaching the High Court if action is not taken.

The case began after a bank manager reported that counterfeit notes worth Rs 49,000 in Rs 500 denominations had been deposited in an ATM on February 18. Based on the complaint, Margao police registered an FIR against unknown persons.

The businessman, a Goa resident for the past 15 years, was later arrested in connection with the case. In his bail plea, he maintained that he had deposited only Rs 4,500 and had been taken into custody without proper verification.

Adv. Angle pointed out that offences related to counterfeit currency carry serious penalties, and the court had initially advised filing for bail at a later stage as the investigation was ongoing.

However, on April 20, the businessman was released under Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with police citing lack of evidence.

Questioning the police action, Angle alleged that basic checks were not conducted before the arrest. He said authorities should have verified ATM records, including the timing of the deposit, before detaining his client.

He further stated that the arrest caused significant distress to the businessman’s family, particularly his wife, who is seven months pregnant.

Describing the episode as a case of police negligence and illegal detention, Angle said steps would be taken to seek compensation. He added that legal recourse, including approaching the High Court, would be pursued if necessary.
