New Delhi, Apr 24: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged bankers across the country to remain vigilant and prepared for emerging threats posed by artificial intelligence, amid growing global concerns linked to advanced AI systems such as those developed by Anthropic, including its reported “Mythos” capabilities.
Addressing banking officials, Sitharaman highlighted the rapid evolution of AI technologies and their potential to disrupt financial systems if not managed carefully. She stressed that while AI can enhance efficiency and customer experience, it also opens the door to sophisticated cyber risks, fraud, and systemic vulnerabilities.
The Finance Minister called on banks to strengthen their digital infrastructure, invest in robust cybersecurity frameworks, and adopt proactive monitoring mechanisms to counter AI-driven threats. She emphasized the importance of preparedness, noting that the financial sector must stay ahead of technological risks rather than react after incidents occur.

Her remarks come at a time when global discussions are intensifying over the safety and regulation of powerful AI systems. Concerns surrounding advanced models, including those reportedly under development by Anthropic, have raised questions about their potential misuse and unintended consequences.
Sitharaman further underscored the need for collaboration between financial institutions, regulators, and technology experts to ensure that innovation does not compromise stability. She urged banks to build internal expertise in AI risk assessment and to align their strategies with evolving regulatory guidelines.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering technological advancement while safeguarding the integrity of the financial ecosystem, calling for a balanced approach that leverages AI’s benefits without exposing the sector to undue risk.
