Dahod, Apr 21: The Gujarat government has ordered a detailed inquiry after a suspected food poisoning incident at a wedding function in Dahod left hundreds of attendees unwell, with 34 people still undergoing treatment in hospitals as of Tuesday.

State Health Minister Praful Pansheriya confirmed that the incident took place on Monday evening during a private function, adding that a report has been sought from district authorities and is expected within the next couple of days.

According to health officials, at least 184 people have already been discharged after receiving treatment, while others with mild symptoms were managed at local healthcare centres.

Dr Rajiv Damor, Resident Medical Officer at Zydus Hospital, said the event was attended by around 200 guests. Many began experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting shortly after consuming food at the function, prompting emergency medical intervention.

Several affected individuals were rushed to hospitals in ambulances and private vehicles as the number of cases quickly rose.

Dr Nayan Joshi, the district epidemic officer, said that officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are assisting in the investigation. Food samples from the venue have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of the illness.

While the source of contamination has not yet been confirmed, initial scrutiny is focused on the food served during the gathering.

Authorities said no fatalities have been reported so far, and most patients are in stable condition.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns around food safety standards at large events. Officials added that further administrative or legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation and lab reports expected in the coming days.
