Chandigarh, Apr 21: Academician Madhu Kishwar has been booked following a complaint by a Chandigarh resident alleging circulation of forged and misleading content on social media.
An FIR has been registered against Kishwar and several other social media users at Sector-26 police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 196 (promoting enmity between groups), Section 336(1) (forgery), and Section 356 (criminal defamation), along with sections of the IT Act.
According to an official statement issued by Chandigarh police on Monday, the complaint was filed on April 19, alleging that forged social media posts and video clips containing obscene text were being circulated, misidentifying the individual seen in the video.
The complainant alleged that the content was deliberately fabricated with the intent to mislead, damage reputation, and disturb public peace and tranquillity. It was further stated that the video in question originally featured a travel vlogger, and was shared from his wife’s social media account.
Police said statements of the woman, her husband, and another individual seen in the video have been recorded as part of the preliminary investigation.
Meanwhile, Kishwar, in a post on social media platform X, stated that a Chandigarh police team visited her residence late Monday night to serve notice regarding the FIR.
She said she objected to the timing of the visit, citing legal provisions that restrict police from visiting or arresting women at night, and requested the team to return in the morning.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
