JD(U) defers leadership choice, authorises Nitish Kumar to decide successor

Patna, Apr 20: In a significant political development in Bihar, the Janata Dal (United) held its first major legislative party meeting following the resignation of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister. The meet concluded without naming a new legislative party leader, instead entrusting Kumar with the authority to make the final decision.

The nearly hour-long meeting took place at 1, Anne Marg in Patna and resulted in a unanimous resolution empowering the party’s national president, Nitish Kumar, to select the new leader of the legislative wing.

Addressing the media, JD(U) Chief Spokesperson Neeraj Kumar confirmed the decision, stating that party members collectively expressed appreciation for Nitish Kumar’s leadership and his role in shaping Bihar’s identity on both national and global platforms.

“National President Nitish Kumar has been authorised to choose the legislative party leader. The party has unanimously acknowledged his contributions and achievements,” he said.

During the meeting, Nitish Kumar indicated that while he would continue fulfilling his parliamentary duties, he also plans to stay actively involved in state politics. He intends to tour different regions of Bihar with party leaders to remain connected with grassroots organisational work and monitor ongoing government initiatives.

Dismissing speculation of internal rifts, Neeraj Kumar asserted that there was no disagreement within the party. “There is absolutely no dispute—our party itself stands for unity,” he remarked, adding that no individual names were discussed during the meet.

The proposal to authorise Nitish Kumar was moved by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and received unanimous support from party legislators.

Meanwhile, the absence of an immediate decision has sparked political speculation. Posters backing Nishant Kumar had appeared ahead of the meeting, projecting him as a potential future leader. However, party sources clarified that he is currently ineligible for the role, as he is not a member of either house of the legislature. His consideration would only be possible after being elected as an MLA or MLC.
