Aldona MLA flags water crisis, to meet minister over supply cuts

Panaji, Apr 20: Raising strong concerns over worsening water scarcity in his constituency, Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Sunday criticised the handling of the issue and said he would soon meet the Drinking Water Minister to seek immediate intervention.

Stating that residents would not tolerate “injustice”, Ferreira said the crisis has intensified over the past few days, with several areas witnessing erratic and reduced water supply. He pointed out that localities such as Aldona, Sainagar, Olaulim, Calvim and Carona have been affected, with supply dropping sharply.

Highlighting the issue, Ferreira said that in parts of neighbouring Porvorim, including Betim, water supply has reportedly been disrupted for days, leading authorities to divert water from Aldona by keeping valves open.

“If the valve is locked, our tanks get filled and water doesn’t flow out. Now, because supply is being diverted, our areas are facing shortages,” he said.

Calling the move unfair, the MLA noted that Porvorim already has its own water treatment plant and reservoir. “The minister and the local MLA had assured that their water problem would be resolved. If they have the capacity, why is our water being diverted?” he questioned.

Ferreira also recalled raising the issue of the Amthane dam during the recent Assembly session. “Last year, even at 50 per cent capacity, people faced hardship. This year, when I raised the issue, the level had dropped to 30 per cent. I asked what steps were being taken to refill the dam before the monsoon, but the response was unclear,” he said.

Stressing the impact on daily life, Ferreira said residents are currently receiving water for barely one to two hours a day. “We are not asking for 24x7 supply. Even three to four hours is sufficient. But people cannot manage without basic water access,” he added.

The MLA said he would take up the matter with the minister next week, urging authorities to ensure equitable distribution and explore technical solutions without burdening Aldona residents.
