Panaji, Apr 13: A tragic incident in Sanguem claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman after she was allegedly shot by a friend during a private gathering, in what police believe may be a case of accidental firing.

The accused, Sweth Gaude (23), a resident of Sanquelim, is said to have pointed a rifle at his friend Tanvi Ghadi (20) during the event in Kazur. According to preliminary reports, he was handling the weapon casually and, reportedly treating it as a joke, pulled the trigger, causing it to discharge.

Tanvi suffered critical injuries and was rushed for medical treatment but later succumbed to them.

Both the victim and the accused are from Sanquelim. Police have taken Gaude into custody for questioning and have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
