Ahmedabad, Apr 10: In a suspected case of food poisoning, nearly 100 people fell sick after consuming a local snack served during a religious programme in a village in Ahmedabad district on Wednesday night, officials said.

According to District Epidemic Medical Officer Dr. Chintan Desai, a total of 96 residents of Rajpura village under Detroj taluka were rushed to hospitals in the early hours of Thursday after they developed symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

The affected persons had reportedly consumed ‘sev-khamani’ served at the religious gathering held on Wednesday night.

Officials said 38 patients are currently under treatment in hospitals, while the remaining were discharged after receiving medical care. All hospitalized patients are stated to be in stable condition.

Following the incident, a health department team visited the village and initiated an investigation. In addition to those hospitalized, around 214 other villagers who had consumed the snack were given preventive treatment as a precautionary measure.

Police and food safety authorities have been informed, and samples of food and water have been collected for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of the suspected outbreak, officials added.
