Abuja, Apr 9: Armed men killed at least 20 people and abducted several others in a deadly attack in northwest Nigeria, according to residents and humanitarian sources.

The attack took place in Shiroro district of Niger State, around 250 km from the capital Abuja. The region has long been affected by activities of kidnapping gangs and Islamist militants.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that gunmen stormed the villages of Bagna and Erena on Tuesday. While police officially reported three deaths, including two community guards and a driver, local residents and community groups claimed the toll was significantly higher, with at least 20 people killed.

Residents said the attackers arrived on motorbikes in the early hours and opened fire, catching villagers off guard. The assailants reportedly operated for several hours, overwhelming local security forces. Homes were also destroyed, forcing many residents to flee to neighbouring areas.

The violence is part of a broader wave of attacks in the region. Local clergy and community sources indicated that more than 40 people have been killed across multiple villages in Niger and Kebbi states since Sunday.

No group has officially claimed responsibility, but authorities and locals have blamed a faction linked to extremist networks operating in the region. The attackers were reported to have targeted victims indiscriminately, killing people regardless of religion or background.
