IED defused in J&K’s Shopian district, security forces ensure safety

Srinagar, Apr 8: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district successfully detected and defused an improvised explosive device (IED) on Wednesday, officials confirmed. The device was discovered along the Zainpora-Chitargam road during routine area sanitisation conducted early in the morning. Authorities said the IED was likely intended to target vehicles of the security forces traveling on this route.

Traffic on the road was temporarily halted as the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was deployed to neutralise the threat. The device was safely dismantled without causing any harm.

IEDs, or improvised explosive devices, are homemade bombs commonly used by terrorists or insurgent groups to cause destruction or casualties. Typically assembled from conventional explosives, military-grade components, or chemical substances, these devices can vary from small pipe bombs to large vehicle-borne IEDs capable of extensive damage. Often disguised on roadsides, buried underground, or hidden in vehicles, IEDs pose a significant threat to both civilians and security forces in conflict zones.

In Jammu and Kashmir, routine sanitisation exercises are carried out by road opening parties (ROPs) and security personnel to detect such explosives. These operations, conducted shortly after dawn, ensure the safety of military convoys, VIP movements, and civilians using highways and local roads. The swift action in Shopian reflects ongoing efforts to maintain security and prevent attacks in sensitive areas.
