California, Apr 8: Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot a man during a targeted traffic stop in California’s Central Valley after he allegedly attempted to run over an officer, officials said.

The incident occurred near Interstate 5 in Patterson, about 90 miles south of Sacramento. The injured man was taken to hospital following the shooting.

According to a statement by Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, officers opened fire in self-defence after the suspect used his vehicle in an attempt to ram an agent.

The Department of Homeland Security identified the individual as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant allegedly linked to the 18th Street Gang and wanted in El Salvador in connection with a murder case.

“As officers approached the car, the wanted gang member weaponised his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over. Following their training, our officers fired defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public,” the statement said.

Dashcam footage obtained by media outlets shows agents surrounding a vehicle before it reverses and attempts to move across lanes, with one officer seen running out of its path. The exact sequence of gunfire remains unclear, as the videos lack audio.

Eyewitness Christina Valencia said she heard multiple gunshots shortly after noticing flashing lights, though her account has not been independently verified.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into the incident. Acting Special Agent in Charge Eugene Wu appealed to the public for any additional information or video evidence.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is assisting in the probe, while noting that no local officers were directly involved in the incident.

Reacting to the development, the office of Gavin Newsom said federal authorities are expected to coordinate with state and local law enforcement during the investigation.

Officials said incidents involving vehicles have become increasingly common during enforcement operations, with the Department of Homeland Security citing a rise in attacks against federal agents in recent months.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
