BJP confident of wins in Assam, Bengal polls: Gadkari

New Delhi, Apr 5: Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party will secure victories in the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal.

Polling in Assam is scheduled for April 9, while West Bengal will go to polls in two phases on April 23 and 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.

In an interview, Gadkari said the BJP’s approach is centred on inclusive development and unity. “We will win in both Assam and West Bengal. It is our policy to take everyone together irrespective of religion. We are opposed to infiltrators but not against Muslims,” he said.

Highlighting development as the party’s key agenda, Gadkari said infrastructure projects worth around Rs 5 lakh crore are being implemented across the northeastern region, including Assam. He added that projects worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore have already been completed, while works worth Rs 1.5–2 lakh crore are underway, with additional projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in the pipeline.

He noted that investments in roads, highways and logistics are expected to boost connectivity and economic growth in the region.

The remarks come as the Assam government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma seeks another term, highlighting its development record.

Reiterating the party’s stand, Gadkari said inclusivity remains central, adding that opposition is only towards illegal infiltration and not any specific community.

On West Bengal, he said there is growing support for change and that the BJP will focus on governance and development despite a tough contest.

Responding to allegations by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over electoral roll revision, Gadkari said national interest should remain paramount in all such matters.
