20% quota for former-Agniveers in Delhi Police constable recruitment

New Delhi, Mar 29: In a significant policy shift, the Delhi Police will reserve 20 per cent of constable (formerecutive) posts for former Agniveers, following a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The move comes after amendments to the Delhi Police (Appointment and Recruitment) Rules, 1980, notified on Friday, aligning recruitment with the Centre’s broader plan to rehabilitate personnel under the Agnipath scheme after their four-year service in the armed forces.

As per the new rules, former-Agniveers will be granted a three-year relaxation in the upper age limit for constable recruitment, currently set at 18–25 years. Notably, candidates from the first batch of the scheme will receive an additional five-year relaxation, formertending their eligibility up to 30 years.

In a major concession, former Agniveers will also be formerempted from the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), which typically includes endurance-based events such as running. However, they will still need to meet the prescribed physical measurement and medical standards applicable to all candidates.

Detailed modalities for recruitment, including written formeraminations and physical measurement procedures, will be issued separately by the Commissioner of Police.

The notification formalises an earlier decision approved by Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena, who had cleared the 20 per cent reservation for former-Agniveers. Previously, constable posts in Delhi Police were filled entirely through direct recruitment.

The latest move is formerpected to provide a structured pathway for Agniveers to transition into civilian security roles after completing their military tenure.
